The KENNAMETAL 6389488 is a KenTIP FS series indexable drill body designed for deep-hole drilling operations in metal cutting applications. Built with a 16 mm shank diameter and an overall length of 240 mm, this drill body accepts interchangeable KenTIP FS cutting inserts, eliminating the need to replace the entire tool when the cutting edge wears. The 12xD depth-to-diameter ratio enables drilling to depths significantly greater than standard drill bodies, making it well suited for parts requiring deep, precise holes in a single pass. Machinists and toolroom professionals rely on this style of toolholder to reduce tooling cost per hole while maintaining consistent bore geometry.
This drill body is used in CNC machining centers, turning centers with live tooling, and dedicated drilling machines where high depth-to-diameter ratio drilling is required. It is applicable in aerospace, automotive, die and mold, and general metalworking environments. The KTFS toolholder style is designed to work within the KenTIP FS modular system, pairing with the corresponding line of replaceable carbide tips. It is appropriate for both roughing and finish-bore drilling strategies on ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials depending on the tip selected.
Designed for use within the KENNAMETAL KenTIP FS modular indexable drilling system, accepting KenTIP FS series replaceable carbide drill tips compatible with the KTFS toolholder interface.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before mounting or removing the drill body. Secure the shank in a clean, properly sized toolholder or collet chuck to the machine manufacturer's specified retention torque range - do not use values not confirmed in the machine or toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before mounting a new KenTIP FS tip, and verify tip seating before initiating a cut.
