The KENNAMETAL 6389422 is a straight-shank indexable drill body from the KenTIP FS series, designed for use with interchangeable carbide drill tips in CNC machining and production drilling operations. The body features a 3/8-inch straight-cylindrical shank and a 5xD drill depth-to-diameter ratio, making it well suited for moderate-depth hole-making in metalworking applications. With a flute length of 52.70 mm and an overall length of 97 mm, this body is compact and fits tooling setups where space and rigidity are both factors. Toolholder style is KTFS. Installation and tip indexing are handled by machinists and CNC setup technicians in job shop, aerospace, and general manufacturing environments.
This indexable drill body is used in production machining environments where repeatable hole quality and fast tip changes are priorities. The KenTIP FS platform allows the cutting tip to be swapped without removing the body from the spindle, reducing downtime on CNC lathes, machining centers, and drill presses. It is appropriate for drilling into steel, cast iron, and other ferrous materials in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The 5xD depth ratio supports through-hole and blind-hole applications in medium-thickness workpieces.
Designed for use within the KENNAMETAL KenTIP FS indexable drill system using KTFS-style interchangeable drill tips. Specific compatible tip part numbers should be confirmed using KENNAMETAL tooling catalogs or selection guides for the KenTIP FS platform.
This drill body is installed by machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before mounting or removing the drill body or indexing the tip insert. Use the appropriate KENNAMETAL torque key or wrench for tip seating as specified in the KenTIP FS assembly instructions - do not use improvised tools. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable ANSI machining standards when setting tool length offsets and running the first-piece hole cycle.
