The KENNAMETAL 6388704 is a replaceable drill tip in the KTFSS series, designed for use with compatible indexable drill bodies that accept an L-seat insert. It is manufactured from solid carbide with a fine-grain material grade and carries the KCP15A manufacturer grade designation. The tip features a 180-degree point angle with an HPG insert geometry and a PVD-applied AlTiN coating. With a cutting diameter of 0.437 inches (11.00 mm), a functional length of 0.2185 inches, and an overall projection of 0.315 inches, this tip is sized for precision hole-making in metalworking environments. Installation and changeover are performed by machinists and tooling technicians on CNC machining centers and manual drill setups.
This drill tip is intended for drilling operations in steel and cast iron workpieces, covering ISO material groups P and K. It is well-suited for demanding drilling scenarios including inclined exit surfaces, stacked plate setups, and standard through-hole and blind-hole drilling. The helical, 2-flute, 2-margin geometry supports accurate hole entry and exit. The regular spiral type and clamp-style insert holding method make it compatible with KTFSS-series indexable drill bodies. Coolant-through is not supported on this tip.
Designed for use with KTFSS-series indexable drill bodies accepting an L insert seat size. Compatible primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K). Refer to KENNAMETAL KTFSS series tooling documentation to confirm body-to-tip pairing before installation.
This replaceable tip is installed and indexed by a machinist or tooling technician; ensure the drill body is fully removed from the spindle and all machine power is locked out before tip replacement. The clamp-style holding method requires the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the drill body manufacturer - do not substitute tools that may damage the seating pocket. Inspect the insert seat for chips or contamination before seating the new tip to ensure full contact and runout accuracy. Follow the machine tool builder and cutting tool manufacturer torque guidelines for the specific drill body model.
