The KENNAMETAL 6388623 is a solid carbide replaceable tip drill insert designed for use in KTFS-series modular drill bodies. Manufactured under grade KCP15A with a fine-grain carbide substrate, this insert features an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating applied via PVD process, providing heat and wear resistance in demanding cutting applications. The insert carries an HPG geometry designation and measures 49/64 inches (0.7656 inches) in cutting diameter. It is installed and replaced by machinists and tool-crib technicians in production and job-shop environments where indexable tooling systems are standard practice.
This insert is suited for drilling steel and cast iron workpieces, classified under primary workpiece material codes P and K. The 2-flute, 2-margin helical flute configuration with regular spiral supports stable chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole operations. Supported applications include standard drilling, inclined-surface entry, and stacked-plate drilling, making it a capable choice for structural, fabrication, and general metalworking setups. No coolant-through capability is present on this insert, so external flood or mist coolant delivery should be used when thermal management is required.
Designed for use with KTFS-series modular drill bodies requiring an X-size insert seat. Compatible with primary workpiece materials including steel (P) and cast iron (K) per ISO material classification. ISO designation for this insert is KTFSS07656HPG.
Installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine placed in a locked-out, de-energized state before handling. The insert is clamp-held in the drill body seat; use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamp screw to seat the insert properly without overtightening. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before installation to ensure accurate seating and runout control. Follow the drill body manufacturer's setup documentation for insert orientation and clamping sequence.
