The KENNAMETAL 6388594 is a solid carbide replaceable tip drill insert designed for use in KTFS-series replaceable tip drill bodies. Manufactured in grade KCP15A with a fine-grain carbide substrate, this insert features an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) PVD coating that promotes heat resistance and tool life in demanding drilling operations. The HPG insert geometry with a 180-degree included drill point angle supports self-centering entry and clean chip evacuation. With two helical flutes and a two-margin design, it delivers consistent hole quality in steel and cast iron workpieces. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and general metalworking contractors alike rely on carbide insert tooling to maintain cycle times and hole tolerances.
This insert is suited for drilling in steel and cast iron, including inclined-exit surfaces and stacked-plate applications. The 5/16-inch (0.3125 inch) cutting diameter targets typical hole sizes found in structural, fabrication, and maintenance machining work. The insert seat size is E, compatible with KTFSS-series drill body holders. No through-coolant capability is required on this grade, making it straightforward to apply on standard machining centers and drill presses without coolant-through spindle requirements.
Designed as a replaceable tip insert for KENNAMETAL KTFSS-series drill bodies requiring an E-seat insert. Compatible primary workpiece materials include steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K). No specific additional model compatibility was stated in the product data.
Installation of replaceable tip drill inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the drill body and insert seat are clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert to achieve proper clamping and runout. Use the manufacturer-specified torque driver or clamp key for the insert holding clamp - do not over-tighten with non-standard tools. Confirm spindle speed and feed rate are set per the tooling manufacturer recommendations for the workpiece material before engaging the cut.
