The KENNAMETAL 6388579 is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for precision hole-making in demanding machining applications. This drill features a solid carbide tip in grade KCP15A with an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) coating applied via PVD process, delivering strong wear resistance and heat tolerance at elevated cutting speeds. The 143-degree included angle and HPG insert geometry are optimized for aggressive chip formation and stable entry in a wide range of workpiece materials. Machinists and toolroom professionals working on CNC machining centers will find this drill well suited to high-throughput production environments where tip replaceability reduces tooling downtime.
This replaceable tip drill is used in metal-cutting operations on CNC machining centers and drill presses in both job shop and production floor settings. The 18mm cutting diameter (0.7087 inches) places it in a common range for structural, mechanical, and die-mold drilling applications. The KTFS series platform accepts W-seat insert sizing, and the HPG geometry is matched to the KCP15A grade for optimized performance in steel and cast materials. No through-coolant is provided on this configuration, making it appropriate for setups where external coolant delivery is standard.
Designed for use within the KENNAMETAL KTFS series replaceable tip drill platform using W insert seat sizing. Compatible with KTFS series drill bodies accepting HPG geometry tips in the KCP15A grade.
Installation of replaceable carbide drill tips should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked. Use the manufacturer-recommended torque wrench and seating tool to secure the carbide tip to the drill body - never use impact tools or improvised wrenches on carbide inserts. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before seating a new tip, as contamination can cause premature tip failure or runout. Follow applicable shop safety protocols and machine guarding requirements during tool changes.
