The KENNAMETAL 6388562 is a carbide replaceable tip drill built for productive hole-making in steel and cast iron. It carries the manufacturer part designation KTFSS17400HPGM and runs in the KTFS series. The tip is solid carbide with a fine-grain substrate and a PVD-applied AlTiN finish for heat resistance and extended tool life. The cutting diameter is 17.4mm (0.685 inches), the drill point angle is 180 degrees, and the insert geometry is HPG. Two helical flutes and a 2-margin ground form deliver clean chip evacuation and stable tracking on entry. A clamp-style insert seat (seat size V) secures the replaceable tip. This tool is installed and used by machinists and CNC toolroom technicians in production turning and machining centers.
This drill is suited to drilling operations in steel and cast iron workpieces across both job-shop and production environments. Primary workpiece material codes are P (steel) and K (cast iron). The HPG insert geometry supports standard entry, inclined exit, and stacked-plate drilling applications. The two-flute, two-margin, no-coolant-through configuration makes it straightforward to deploy on machines where internal coolant is not available. It fits applications where a replaceable-tip design reduces tooling cost versus solid-carbide drills while maintaining tight diameter tolerance.
Designed as an OEM replacement tip drill for KTFS series toolholders accepting seat size V inserts. Specific compatible holder models or shank bodies were not provided in the product data; verify seat size and series compatibility against KENNAMETAL KTFS system documentation before ordering.
Replaceable tip drills of this type are seated and clamped by a machinist or toolroom technician per the machine-tool manufacturer and tooling-system instructions. De-energize and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing the insert tip. Use the correct torque driver or clamping key specified for the KTFS seat to avoid over-torquing the clamp, which can damage the insert seat. Confirm runout and diameter after tip installation before committing to a production run.
