The KENNAMETAL 6296037 is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for high-speed machining of hard and difficult-to-cut materials. Manufactured to ANSI and ISO standards, it carries the industry code VBGW221S0415MT and is assigned the KBH10 grade. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a flat-top chipbreaker geometry, and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. With a 0.25-inch inscribed circle diameter and a 0.0156-inch corner radius, this insert is built for finish and semi-finish turning applications where dimensional accuracy and tool life on hardened workpieces are the primary concerns. It is screw-mounted and designed for neutral-hand use.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on hard materials classified under ISO material group H, including hardened steels, hard cast irons, and similar ferrous alloys typically processed in the 45-65 HRC range. The VBGW insert style with positive rake and positive side clearance geometry reduces cutting forces and supports precision finishing passes. It is commonly used in production turning environments where consistency across multiple cutting edges is required. The KBH10 grade is uncoated PCBN, making it appropriate for dry or minimal-lubrication hard-turning setups.
Designed for use with VBGW-style screw-on toolholders. Conforms to ANSI insert code VBGW221 and ISO insert code VBGW110304. Compatible toolholders must accept a screw-on insert with a 0.1102-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping screw specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured in the turret before seating or replacing the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified clamping screw and tighten to the toolholder documentation; do not overtighten, as PCBN inserts are brittle and susceptible to fracture under clamp distortion. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for chips or debris before installation to ensure full, flat contact.
