The KENNAMETAL 6231921 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision turning and grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the Beyond Evolution series standard, this insert features the ER style profile with a GUN chip breaker geometry and a KCU25 manufacturer grade. It carries an Al2O3 finish applied via PVD coating process, which supports wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted or continuous grooving cuts. The insert has a neutral hand orientation, a cutting width of 0.125 inches, and a maximum depth of cut of 0.091 inches. Insert size is 3, with an insert thickness of 0.157 inches. Machinists and CNC tooling specialists select this insert for controlled chip evacuation in tight groove profiles.
This insert is suited for grooving applications in precision machining environments, including job shops, production turning cells, and tool rooms. The GUN chip breaker geometry is typically applied when machining ductile materials where chip control and groove wall finish are critical. The neutral hand designation makes it compatible with straight radial grooving toolholders without a left or right hand offset requirement. It fits ER-style insert seats within the Beyond Evolution toolholder system. The 20-degree rake angle supports positive cutting action, reducing cutting forces during shallow grooving passes in the 0.075 to 0.100 inch depth of cut range.
Designed for use with ER-style insert seats in the Beyond Evolution series grooving toolholder system. Compatible with toolholders accepting size 3 ER inserts with a 0.125 inch cutting width.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct insert clamp torque driver specified for the toolholder manufacturer to avoid seat damage or insert micro-fracture. Verify insert seating and clamp engagement before returning the toolholder to service.
