The KENNAMETAL 6231903 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the ER insert style with a GUP chip breaker geometry, it carries a KCU10 manufacturer grade and an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process. The cutting width is 2 mm, the maximum depth of cut is 1.8 mm, and the cutting height is 3.21 mm. The 14-degree rake angle and AlTiN finish support higher cutting speeds and improved tool life in ferrous and hardened materials. This insert is part of the Beyond Evolution series and is sized and toleranced for direct installation into compatible ER-style grooving toolholders.
This insert is suited for precision grooving, undercutting, and parting on small-diameter workpieces in production turning environments. Its metric sizing and neutral hand orientation make it applicable across a wide range of turning center setups, both horizontal and vertical. Machinists and CNC operators working with ferrous alloys, stainless steels, and hardened materials will find the KCU10 grade and AlTiN PVD coating appropriate for moderate to high cutting speeds. The GUP chip breaker promotes controlled chip evacuation in shallow grooving passes up to 1.8 mm deep.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for ER-style grooving and parting toolholders compatible with size 2 inserts in the Beyond Evolution series. Verify toolholder seat geometry and clamping style against the ER2GUP specification before installation.
This insert should be installed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer's specified seating procedure, and ensure the insert seats flush with no rocking before clamping. Inspect the insert seat and shim for wear or debris before installing a new insert.
