The KENNAMETAL 6178105 is a solid carbide milling insert carrying ISO designation HNGJ0905ANSNHD and manufacturer grade KCSM40. It features a hexagonal shape with an included angle of 120 degrees, delivering 12 usable cutting edges on a double-sided body. The insert measures 0.625 inches in both length and width, with a thickness of 0.2151 inches (7/32 inches nominal) and a corner radius of 0.0469 inches (3/64 inches). A PVD-applied TiAlN plus TiN multilayer coating improves heat and wear resistance during aggressive cuts. The neutral hand orientation and chamfered, honed cutting edge style suit a range of milling strategies across demanding workpiece materials.
This insert is designed for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — material application codes P, M, and S under ISO classification. It is compatible with the Kennametal Dodeka cutter series and is held in place by screw clamping. The HD chip breaker geometry is selected for heavy-duty cutting conditions where chip control and edge stability are critical. Typical applications include face milling, shoulder milling, and high-feed operations on machining centers running ferrous and high-temperature alloy workpieces. The maximum depth of cut reaches 0.3345 inches.
Designed for use with the Kennametal Dodeka cutter series. Insert style HNGJ, size code 535, conforms to ANSI designation HNGJ535ANSNHD and ISO designation HNGJ0905ANSNHD. Intended for machining steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician using the appropriate Torx or hex key for the cutter body screw seat. Ensure the cutter body is removed from the spindle and the machine is locked out before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully and evenly in the pocket before torquing the clamping screw to the cutter manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert pocket for chips, wear, or damage before seating a new insert.
