The KENNAMETAL 6178103 is a solid carbide hexagon milling insert carrying the ISO designation HNGJ0905ANENLD and manufactured to grade KCSM40. It features a TiAlN plus TiN physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating applied over the carbide substrate, delivering heat and wear resistance suited to aggressive milling conditions. The insert is double-sided with 12 usable cutting edges, a negative rake geometry, and an LD chip breaker configuration. With a maximum depth of cut of 0.3383 inches and a corner radius of 3/64 inch (0.0469 inches), it is designed for productive material removal in demanding environments. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling specialists are the primary installers of this insert type.
This insert is intended for milling applications on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — material application codes P, M, and S. It is compatible with Kennametal Dodeka cutter series toolholders that accept the HNGJ insert style with a screw-holding method. Typical use cases include face milling and shoulder milling on CNC machining centers in both production and job-shop environments, particularly where high cutting-edge count reduces per-edge cost and where PVD-coated carbide grades are specified for heat-resistant alloys and stainless steels.
Designed for use with Kennametal Dodeka cutter series toolholders that accept the HNGJ insert style secured by screw-holding method. Compatible primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (material codes P, M, S).
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician. Disengage the machine spindle and confirm the cutter body is fully secured in the toolholder before seating or removing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key specified by the cutter body manufacturer to tighten the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert. Inspect the insert pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper support and runout.
