The KENNAMETAL 6012722 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the ER-P insert style with a neutral hand orientation, it features a 5 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.14 mm, making it well suited for consistent, repeatable groove profiles. The KCU10 grade uses a PVD-applied AlTiN coating over a carbide substrate to provide wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. A positive rake angle of 10 degrees and the GUP chip breaker geometry work together to promote controlled chip evacuation in a range of workpiece materials.
This insert belongs to the Beyond Evolution series and is intended for use in general turning and grooving applications on CNC equipment. The neutral hand designation means it can be run on standard straight grooving toolholders without a left- or right-hand bias. The GUP chip breaker is designed for finishing to medium grooving passes. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in job shop, production turning, and component manufacturing environments will find this insert a direct fit for precision groove work where dimensional accuracy and surface finish matter.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit insert for grooving toolholders that accept the ER-P insert style. Consult the toolholder manufacturer specifications to confirm pocket and clamping compatibility before installation.
Carbide grooving inserts should be seated and clamped by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician following the toolholder manufacturer torque and clamping instructions. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before installing a new insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating, as overloading the insert edge can cause chipping or premature failure.
