The KENNAMETAL 5988781 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the ER-P4GUP style, coated with AlTiN via a PVD process and offered in the KCU25 manufacturer grade. Part of the Beyond Evolution series, it delivers a 4.00 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 2.62 mm. The insert carries a neutral hand orientation, a positive rake angle of 10 degrees, and a full corner radius of 2.00 mm. These characteristics make it well suited for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC turning centers and lathes. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and production turning specialists are the primary users.
This insert is designed for external grooving applications on CNC lathes and turning centers where consistent chip control and dimensional accuracy are required. The GUP chip breaker geometry supports reliable chip evacuation in a range of workpiece materials. The KCU25 grade with AlTiN coating is appropriate for demanding cutting conditions where wear resistance and thermal stability are priorities. Typical depth-of-cut range is 2.00 mm to 3.00 mm, accommodating standard external grooving work in production environments.
Designed for use with Beyond Evolution series grooving toolholders that accept ER-P style inserts with an insert seat size of 4.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and clamping specifications. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before seating a new insert. Handle carbide inserts with care to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
