The KENNAMETAL 5968028 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the KCP25B grade with a CVD-applied TiOCN coating, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection in a range of workpiece materials. The insert features a right-hand cutting orientation, a 1.57 mm cutting width, and a maximum depth of cut of 2.39 mm. A positive rake angle of 3 degrees and the K chip breaker geometry promote clean chip evacuation and reduced cutting forces during moderate to heavy grooving passes.
This insert is suited for external grooving, profiling, and light parting on small- to medium-diameter workpieces in production turning environments. It fits NG-style Top Notch toolholders that use a mechanical clamp holding method. The insert size is 3, with a cutting height of 8.74 mm and an overall width of 4.98 mm. It is a metric-measurement insert and is appropriate for use by machinists and CNC operators in job shops, production facilities, and toolroom applications where consistent groove geometry and insert repeatability are required.
Designed for use in NG-style Top Notch series toolholders that accept size 3 grooving inserts with a clamp holding method. Consult the KENNAMETAL Top Notch toolholder selection guide to confirm holder compatibility before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamp screw — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for debris or wear before seating the new insert. Verify cutting parameters against KENNAMETAL grade recommendations for the workpiece material before resuming operation.
