The KENNAMETAL 5697949 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CPMT3251LF geometry with the KCP10B multilayer CVD coating. The coating stack consists of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiOCN applied through an MTCVD process, delivering high wear resistance against steel and cast iron along with moderate wear resistance on aluminum and non-ferrous materials. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, a positive side clearance, and a 11-degree relief angle. The cutting edge is honed for a controlled, consistent edge on finishing and light machining passes. It provides 2 cutting edges per insert and mounts via screw-on holding method.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations where finishing and light stock removal are the primary objectives. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts on steel and cast iron workpieces, making it a standard choice for CNC lathe work in production machining environments. The KCP10B grade covers Steel (P) applications requiring high wear resistance and Aluminum and Non-Ferrous (N) applications requiring moderate wear resistance to high toughness. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shops and production facilities are the typical end users.
Designed as a screw-on style replacement insert for CPMT3251 toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. Compatible toolholders must accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle CPMT-style insert with a screw-hole diameter of 0.1732 inches and a screw-on clamping method.
This insert is installed by a machinist or CNC operator using the appropriate torx or hex drive screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Do not over-torque the clamping screw, and always seat the insert fully against the pocket before tightening. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or wear that could prevent proper seating and affect dimensional accuracy.
