The KENNAMETAL 5697182 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPMR321 configuration, part of the KENDEX series. It features a multilayer CVD coating system of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiOCN, delivering high wear resistance on steel and cast iron as well as moderate wear resistance and toughness on aluminum and non-ferrous materials. The insert measures 16.5 mm (0.6495 inches) in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch (0.0156-inch) corner radius. Designed for neutral hand orientation, it carries a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a relief angle of 11 degrees. CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals specify this insert for medium machining operations where consistent edge life is critical.
The 5697182 is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and non-ferrous workpieces in both production and job-shop environments. Its 60-degree triangular shape provides three usable cutting edges per insert, making it a cost-effective choice for high-volume turning centers and manual lathes alike. The chip breaker geometry is rated for medium machining, covering moderate depths of cut and feed rates across a range of workpiece materials. The insert seats and clamps using standard TPMR-style toolholders.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state before insert indexing or replacement. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket and verify clamp torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a fresh edge, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or insert fracture. Dispose of worn inserts according to applicable shop and local regulations for carbide tooling waste.
