The KENNAMETAL 5657163 is a solid carbide milling insert in the APKT series, designed for indexable milling operations in demanding metal-cutting applications. Manufactured to grade SC3025, this parallelogram-style insert carries a multilayer CVD coating consisting of TiN, TiCN, and Al2O3, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection during high-speed cutting cycles. The insert measures 0.1870 inches thick, 0.3750 inches wide, and 0.6560 inches in length, with an 11-degree relief angle and an 85-degree included angle. It is installed via screw-clamping and is sized to insert size code 1604. Machinists and tooling technicians working in production or job-shop environments will recognize this as a direct-fit replacement insert for compatible APKT-style milling bodies.
This insert is engineered primarily for cutting cast iron, corresponding to material application code K. The SC3025 grade with CVD multilayer coating is well suited to stable, continuous-cut operations in gray cast iron and ductile iron workpieces. Material grades C1 and C2 cover the intended hardness range. The chip breaker designation is 43, which supports controlled chip formation during face milling and shoulder milling passes. This insert is a right-hand configuration and is intended for use in indexable milling cutters that accept APKT series inserts at the 16-size designation.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for indexable milling cutter bodies that accept APKT series inserts at size 16 (insert size code 1604) with screw-clamping retention.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per site lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the cutter body manufacturer to seat and torque the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide insert. Inspect the insert pocket seat for chips or debris before indexing or replacing. Verify insert orientation matches the right-hand designation of the cutter body before resuming operation.
