The KENNAMETAL 5640978 is a CNMG432UP grade KCM15B solid carbide turning insert designed for high-productivity metal removal in demanding turning, facing, and boring operations. The insert features a multilayer MTCVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 coating that delivers a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to interrupted and continuous cuts. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape provides two usable cutting edges per face for a total of four cutting edges per insert. A honed cutting edge and negative rake geometry reduce chipping risk during roughing and medium machining passes. Chip breaker style UP is optimized for steel and stainless steel workpiece materials.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. Grade KCM15B targets ISO material groups P and M, making it a practical choice for job shops and production environments that machine a range of ferrous and difficult-to-machine alloys. The UP chip breaker geometry handles roughing through medium machining chip loads, helping manage chip flow across variable feed and depth-of-cut conditions. It seats in KENLOC-style toolholders that accept clamp and pin holding methods with negative side clearance.

Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician familiar with indexable insert toolholders. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Ensure the insert pocket seat and shim are clean and free of chips before seating the insert, as debris under the insert can cause premature edge failure or toolholder damage. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamp torque specifications and do not exceed the maximum depth of cut listed for the insert geometry.
