The KENNAMETAL 5640977 is a solid carbide turning insert carrying the industry designation CNMG432P in the KCM15B grade. It features a multilayer TiCN and Al2O3 CVD coating applied via MTCVD process, delivering a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to demanding metal-removal operations. The insert is 12.9 mm (0.508 inches) long with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0313-inch corner radius, and an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape. With four cutting edges and a negative rake geometry, it is designed for roughing and medium machining passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is engineered for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The KCM15B grade provides moderate wear resistance and toughness on steel (P-class) and moderate to high wear resistance on stainless steel (M-class), making it a practical choice across general-purpose and interrupted-cut scenarios in industrial machining cells. It is held by clamp or pin methods and seats in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNMG432 inserts.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNMG432 (ANSI) or CNMG120408 (ISO) inserts. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring of steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpiece materials per ANSI and ISO classification codes P and M.
Installation is performed by trained machinists or CNC setup technicians. Before seating or replacing inserts, power down the machine and verify the spindle is fully stopped. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are free of chips and debris before securing the insert with the appropriate clamp or pin hardware. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut of 0.1691 inches as specified for this insert geometry.
