The KENNAMETAL 5640976 is a CNMG432MR turning insert in grade KCM15B, designed for external and internal turning operations on steel and stainless steel workpieces. The insert features a multilayer CVD coating combining TiCN and Al2O3 applied via MTCVD process, delivering a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to moderate roughing and medium machining conditions. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape provides a strong cutting geometry with four usable cutting edges. The honed cutting edge style and MR chip breaker geometry help manage chip flow during heavier material removal passes. Licensed HVAC techs and machinists running turning centers or manual lathes will recognize this as a workhorse insert for production steel turning.
This insert is used in turning, facing, and boring applications on CNC turning centers and manual lathes. It is primarily targeted at steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M) workpiece materials, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium. The MR chip breaker is optimized for roughing to medium machining depths, making it appropriate for production environments where tool life and chip control across varying cut depths are priorities. The insert seats in KENLOC-style toolholders that accept CNMG-style inserts with clamp and pin holding methods.

Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered off and spindle locked. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Torque the clamping screw and pin per the toolholder manufacturer specifications — do not substitute generic fastener torque values. Inspect the insert seat and chip breaker geometry for damage before each use to prevent toolholder damage or workpiece scrapping.
