The KENNAMETAL 5640971 is a CNMG431MP turning insert in grade KCM15B, designed for external and internal turning operations on steel and stainless steel workpieces. It is constructed from solid carbide and features a multilayer MTCVD coating of TiCN and Al2O3, which balances wear resistance with toughness across a range of cutting conditions. The insert measures 12.9 mm (0.5077 inches) in length with a 1/2-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius. The 80-degree diamond shape provides good nose strength while maintaining accessibility in tight workpiece profiles. This insert is part of the KENLOC series and is installed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians.
This insert is suited for roughing and medium machining operations on steel, stainless steel, and superalloys including titanium. Its MP chip breaker geometry is optimized for these conditions, providing controlled chip flow during moderate to heavy material removal. The neutral hand orientation allows the insert to be applied in turning, facing, and boring operations. With four cutting edges and compatibility with clamp and pin holding methods, it is a practical option for production turning centers running ISO and ANSI-standard toolholders.
Designed for use in ANSI and ISO CNMG431 and CNMG120404-compatible toolholders within the KENLOC series. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring applications on steel (P), stainless steel (M), and superalloys and titanium workpiece materials. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards.
This insert is installed and indexed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down the machine spindle and lock out the turret before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque on the clamping screw or pin to avoid seat damage or insert movement during cutting. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or wear before installing a new edge.
