The KENNAMETAL 5640907 is a CCMT2152LF screw-on turning insert in grade KCM15B, designed for precision finishing and light machining operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a 7-degree relief angle, promoting clean chip flow and reduced cutting forces. It is coated via MTCVD with alternating TiCN and Al2O3 layers, delivering a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to steel and stainless steel workpieces. With 2 cutting edges and a honed cutting edge style, it is indexed by a screw-on holding method for repeatable positioning. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments are the primary users.
This insert is optimized for turning, facing, and boring applications where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are the primary goals. The LF chip breaker geometry is engineered for finishing and light machining passes, making it well suited to steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M) workpieces, as well as superalloys and titanium where moderate wear resistance and toughness are required. The KCM15B grade provides multilayer CVD coating performance across a range of cutting conditions typical of low-to-moderate depths of cut. Typical applications include finish-turning shafts, flanges, and bores in both high-mix and production turning environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard screw-on turning insert conforming to ANSI insert code CCMT2152 and ISO insert code CCMT060208, fitting toolholders designed for CCMT-style screw-on inserts with a 0.25-inch inscribed circle.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct torque driver for the screw-on clamp fastener to avoid cracking the insert or stripping the pocket thread. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination will affect runout and surface finish. Dispose of spent inserts in accordance with applicable carbide recycling or disposal guidelines.
