The KENNAMETAL 5640490 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TNMG332MP geometry, coated with a multilayer TiCN and Al2O3 CVD coating under the KCM15B grade designation. Part of the KENLOC series, this insert features a 60-degree triangular shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a negative rake angle of 6 degrees. The inscribed circle measures 0.375 inches, insert length is 0.6496 inches (16.5 mm), and the corner radius is 0.0313 inches (1/32 inch). With 6 cutting edges and a chamfered-and-honed cutting edge style, it is designed for productive use in high-volume turning, facing, and boring operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops and production facilities are the primary installers.
This insert is engineered for cutting steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpiece materials, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, and S. The MP chip breaker geometry is suited for medium-pass turning applications where controlled chip formation and surface finish consistency are required. The MTCVD multilayer coating provides thermal resistance and wear performance across a range of cutting parameters. It is appropriate for both roughing and semi-finishing passes in general turning and facing operations on CNC lathes and turning centers.
Designed for use in KENLOC-style toolholders that accept TNMG-geometry inserts with clamp and pin holding methods. Suitable for CNC lathes and turning centers configured for negative-rake triangular inserts in the TNMG332 size class.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and the turret is fully indexed and locked before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces before engaging the clamp or pin to avoid micro-movement under cutting loads. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque guidelines and verify insert seating visually before resuming cuts.
