The KENNAMETAL 5640480 is a solid carbide turning insert in the KENLOC series, designed for external and internal turning operations on steel, stainless steel, and superalloy workpieces. It carries the ANSI insert designation CNMG432MP and ISO designation CNMG120408MP, with grade KCM15B and a multilayer MTCVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 coating that delivers moderate wear resistance with strong toughness. The insert features a negative rake, neutral hand orientation, and an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a chamfered and honed cutting edge. Four usable cutting edges and an MP chip breaker geometry make it well suited for roughing and medium machining passes. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists install this insert on compatible KENLOC-style toolholders.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring applications on steel (P-grade workpieces) and stainless steel (M-grade workpieces), covering moderate to high wear-resistance demands. The MP chip breaker geometry is optimized for roughing and medium machining cut depths up to 0.1691 inches. The insert is held by either a clamp or pin method, making it compatible with a range of negative-style KENLOC toolholders used in both CNC lathes and manual turning centers in production and job-shop environments.
Designed as a negative-style KENLOC series replacement insert for CNMG432 and CNMG120408 toolholders used in steel and stainless steel turning, facing, and boring applications. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping method before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine in a locked-out, tagged-out state. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket before engaging the clamp or pin to avoid micro-fractures at the cutting edge. Inspect the pocket and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating a new insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for clamp screws; do not over-torque.
