Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 5640442 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CCMT style, designed for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. This insert features an 80-degree diamond shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a 7-degree relief angle. The KCM15B grade uses a multilayer MTCVD TiCN plus Al2O3 coating to extend tool life and resist wear when cutting steel, stainless steel, and superalloys including titanium. The LF chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip flow at moderate depths of cut. Machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments are the primary users of this insert.

This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, and superalloys including titanium, making it a versatile choice for both general-purpose and high-performance CNC lathe work. The screw-on holding method provides secure seating in compatible CCMT toolholders. With two cutting edges per insert and a maximum depth of cut of 0.0845 inches, it is appropriate for light to moderate stock removal on ferrous and exotic workpiece materials in both job shop and production settings.

Key Features

  • KCM15B grade with multilayer MTCVD TiCN plus Al2O3 CVD coating for extended wear resistance
  • 80-degree diamond insert shape with positive rake for reduced cutting forces
  • LF chip breaker geometry designed for controlled chip evacuation in steel and stainless applications
  • Two usable cutting edges per insert for cost efficiency
  • Screw-on mounting method for repeatable edge indexing and secure toolholder engagement
  • Honed cutting edge style for improved edge stability and surface finish consistency

Compatibility

Designed for use in CCMT-style screw-on toolholders. Compatible with applications involving primary workpiece materials coded P (steel), M (stainless steel), and S (superalloys and titanium) per ISO classification. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards under ISO code CCMT32.52 and industry standard number CCMT2151LF.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to achieve proper screw torque without cracking the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp screw for debris or damage before seating a new edge.
