The KENNAMETAL 5629802 is a spiral flute pipe tap designed for cutting internal NPT threads in pipe fittings, valves, and threaded port applications. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, this tap features 4 right-hand flutes at a 15-degree helix angle, which helps evacuate chips upward during blind-hole and through-hole tapping operations. The 1/2-14 NPT thread form produces the tapered thread profile required for pressure-tight pipe connections. With a thread length of 1.38 inches and a projection of 0.579 inches, the T854 series geometry is suited for production and maintenance tapping where consistent thread form and chip control are critical. Licensed machinists, pipefitters, and HVAC service technicians are the primary users.
This tap is used in applications requiring NPT tapered pipe threads in materials including steel, cast iron, and similar metals. Typical installation scenarios include threading ports in HVAC equipment, plumbing manifolds, hydraulic blocks, and gas line fittings. The spiral flute design is particularly well suited to tapping blind holes where straight-flute taps would pack chips into the bore. The oxide surface treatment provides a degree of lubricity and corrosion resistance during storage and use. Overall length of 3.125 inches allows use in standard tap wrenches and CNC tapping chucks.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use spiral flute pipe tap for applications requiring 1/2-14 NPT internal threads in standard tapping chucks, tap wrenches, and CNC spindles accepting this shank geometry.
Pipe taps should be installed by qualified machinists or pipefitters familiar with NPT thread requirements. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and align the tap perpendicular to the entry surface to avoid bell-mouthing or tap breakage. Follow applicable facility safety procedures when operating tapping equipment.
