The KENNAMETAL 5629791 is a spiral flute pipe tap designed for cutting internal 1/16-27 NPT threads in metal workpieces. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, it features 4 right-hand flutes and a 15-degree helix angle that channels chips up and out of the hole during tapping — a critical advantage when working in blind or semi-blind holes. The tap carries a 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 chamfer to guide thread engagement smoothly. With a thread length of 0.69 inches and a projection of 0.3120 inches, it suits compact pipe fitting applications. Machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance tradespeople use this tap for precision NPT thread work in production and field repair settings.
This tap is suited for threading small-diameter pipe connections in ferrous and non-ferrous metals where NPT taper thread sealing is required. The 1/16-27 NPT size corresponds to nominal 1/16-inch pipe, commonly found in instrument fittings, hydraulic line ports, pneumatic manifolds, and low-pressure fluid system connections. The Series T854 designation identifies it within Kennametal's standard pipe tap product family. It is appropriate for use in both manual tapping handles and CNC tapping operations where spiral flute geometry is specified.
Designed as a standard replacement or production tap for any application requiring 1/16-27 NPT internal threads. Compatible with manual tap handles and machine tapping setups accepting standard straight-shank pipe taps in this size range.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or pipefitter using appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to extend tool life and protect the workpiece finish. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven on-axis to prevent tap breakage — misalignment is the leading cause of failure in small-diameter taps. Power down all equipment and depressurize any hydraulic or pneumatic circuits before tapping ports on live systems. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and consult ASME or applicable standards for NPT thread gauging requirements after tapping.
