The KENNAMETAL 5550702 is a solid carbide hexagon milling insert in the HNPJ series, designed for high-performance milling of steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries the KCPM40 manufacturer grade and features a dual-layer PVD coating of TiAlN and AlCrN for thermal resistance and extended edge life. The insert is double-sided with 12 cutting edges, maximizing tool utilization. At 0.1731 inches thick with a 0.4724-inch inscribed circle, it fits standard Dodeka cutter bodies that accept the HNPJ0604ANSNHD ISO designation. A chamfered and honed cutting edge style paired with the HD chip breaker geometry makes this insert effective in demanding milling applications where heat and abrasion are primary concerns.
This insert is used in face milling and shoulder milling operations on CNC machining centers and manual mills handling difficult-to-machine workpiece materials. It is suited for production environments machining aerospace alloys, austenitic stainless steels, and carbon or alloy steels. The neutral hand orientation and negative rake geometry support stable cutting across a range of depths of cut and feed rates. Machinists and tooling specialists installing this insert into Kennametal Dodeka-series cutter bodies will find the HD chip breaker geometry particularly effective when chip control is critical.
Designed for use in the Kennametal Dodeka cutter series. The ISO code is HNPJ0604ANSNHD and the ANSI code is HNPJ43ANSNHD. Compatible with toolholders accepting inserts in the inscribed circle range of 0.4000 to 0.5000 inches and thickness range of 0.1500 to 0.1750 inches. Insert is held by screw clamping.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the cutter body is removed from the spindle and the machine is fully powered down before seating or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key specified for the Dodeka cutter body screw to avoid stripping the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before installing a new insert.
