The KENNAMETAL 5479698 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in ferrous and hard materials. Built from High-Speed Steel-E (HSS-E) with an oxide coating, it delivers the toughness needed for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, keeping flutes clear and reducing the risk of chip packing in through-hole work. Sized at 10-32 UNF with a plug chamfer and 3B class of fit, this tap produces threads to a standard tolerance suitable for most mechanical fastening applications. Overall length is 2.76 inches, with a thread length of 31/64 inches (0.48 inches). Series T820, material grade KSP39.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. It is the correct choice when threading through-holes in steel or stainless steel components where chip evacuation is a priority. The plug chamfer makes it appropriate for starting in a hole with minimal hand pressure, and the right-hand thread direction matches standard fastener conventions. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance mechanics working on fine-thread fastener applications will find it a direct fit for hand or machine tapping setups.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces requiring 10-32 UNF internal threads to a 3B class of fit. Compatible with standard tap holders and floating tap chucks sized for a 6 mm (0.2362 inch) shank diameter.
Machine tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using a tapping head or CNC rigid-tap cycle set to the correct feed rate for 32 TPI. Power down and lock out any machine tool before changing or inspecting taps. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material — sulfur-based oils are common for steel and stainless steel. Do not reverse the tap in a blind hole, as this tool is optimized for through-hole applications and is not intended for bottom-tapping without substitution of a bottoming tap for final passes.
