The KENNAMETAL 5477299 is a solid carbide milling insert manufactured to the EDPT140408PDERHD2 ISO designation. It features a parallelogram shape with a 70-degree included angle, a positive 15-degree rake angle, and a 5/16-inch corner radius. The insert carries the KC522M manufacturer grade and is finished with an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process, providing thermal resistance and edge hardness for demanding milling applications. At 0.177 inches thick and 0.328 inches wide, this screw-held insert is designed for right-hand cutting and is installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians working with indexable milling toolholders.
This insert is suited for face milling and shoulder milling operations across a range of workpiece materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys and titanium, and hard materials. The HD2 chip breaker geometry is intended for heavier depth-of-cut applications where controlled chip formation is critical. It fits standard EDPT-series toolholders and is appropriate for both production and job-shop environments running ferrous and difficult-to-machine alloys. The insert size code is 1408, and the screw-clamping method ensures positive insert seating under high cutting forces.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for EDPT-series indexable milling toolholders accepting size 1408 inserts with screw-clamp retention. Compatible workpiece materials include steel (ISO P), stainless steel (ISO M), cast iron (ISO K), superalloys and titanium (ISO S), and hard materials (ISO H).
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine powered off and locked out per OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert. Replace the insert at first signs of edge wear to avoid workpiece damage or toolholder damage.
