The KENNAMETAL 5455832 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in ferrous materials. It cuts a 4-48 UNF right-hand thread using a 2-flute spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, keeping the flutes clear during the threading stroke. The tap is manufactured from HSS-E (high-speed steel with cobalt), which improves heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS. An oxide surface treatment provides additional lubricity and mild corrosion resistance. The plug chamfer provides 3 to 5 chamfered threads, making this configuration well suited to through-hole applications where the tap can pass completely through the workpiece. Licensed machinists and precision manufacturing shops are the primary users of this tool.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The 4-48 UNF thread form is a fine-pitch unified thread commonly found in small instrument hardware, electronic assemblies, and precision mechanical components. The T820 series designation identifies the product family within the KENNAMETAL tap line. With an overall length of 1.875 inches and a thread length of approximately 0.51 inches, this tap is sized for use in small-diameter, close-tolerance threaded features typical of light manufacturing and precision machining environments.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces requiring a 4-48 UNF right-hand thread. Material grade KSP39 identifies the specific HSS-E alloy formulation used in this tap.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine tool with rigid or floating tap holder. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before threading begins. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machinery guarding requirements when operating tapping equipment.
