The KENNAMETAL 5431703 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in metric applications. It cuts an M5x0.8 thread profile to a 6H class of fit using a 2-flute, plug chamfer geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the tap during cutting. The tap is manufactured from HSS-E (high-speed steel with cobalt) and carries a dual TiCN and TiN coating for improved wear resistance and lubricity. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.5 inch thread length, it fits standard tap holders for M5 work in production and maintenance environments. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals in both production shop and maintenance repair settings. Its spiral point geometry is particularly effective in through-hole applications where chip evacuation is a priority. The T820 series designation places it within KENNAMETAL's HSS-E spiral point family, and the D4 thread limit suits general-purpose tapping where standard tolerance fits are required. Typical applications include threaded fastener holes in fabricated assemblies, fixtures, and machine components.
Rated for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals per KENNAMETAL material application data. Designed as a through-hole threading tap; not intended for blind-hole applications where chip evacuation back through the hole is required.
Installation is performed by machinists using a standard tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine tool with appropriate M5 tap holder. Secure the workpiece and ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct minor diameter before tapping. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to protect both the tap and the part surface. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when operating powered tapping equipment.
