The KENNAMETAL 5416944 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in metalworking applications. It cuts a 5/8-11 UNC right-hand thread to a 3B class of fit and H3 thread limit, making it suitable for precision fastener applications where controlled tolerances are required. The tap is manufactured from HSS-E (high-speed steel with cobalt), which provides increased heat and wear resistance compared to standard HSS. An oxide coating adds additional lubricity and corrosion resistance during cutting operations. The 3-flute spiral point design pushes chips ahead of the tap and out through the bottom of the hole, keeping the flutes clear during production threading. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in manual or CNC tapping operations are the primary users of this tool.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. Its plug chamfer provides a moderate lead-in, making it appropriate for both production and maintenance threading where the tap can pass fully through the material. The T820 series designation places this tap within a performance line optimized for demanding ferrous material applications. It is appropriate for use on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping arms where rigid or floating tap holders are employed.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Compatible with standard 5/8-11 UNC tap holders and collets sized for a 0.48-inch shank diameter. Verify machine spindle synchronization or use a floating tap holder to prevent thread damage.
This tap is intended for installation by machinists and toolroom professionals using appropriate tapping equipment. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned before beginning the threading cycle. Use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
