The KENNAMETAL 5416894 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in a 5/16-24 UNF thread form. Built from HSS-E (High-Speed Steel-E, grade KSP39), it carries an oxide coating that provides lubricity and light corrosion resistance during cutting operations. The plug chamfer geometry distributes cutting load across the first few threads, making it suitable for production tapping in through-hole applications. With a 3-flute spiral point design, it pushes chips forward ahead of the cut rather than packing them in the flute — reducing tap breakage risk in continuous feeds. Overall length is 2.72 inches with a thread length of 0.69 inches. This tap is used by machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians in metalworking environments.
This tap is rated for use in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron — the typical material range for HSS-E spiral point taps in the light-to-medium production category. It is suited to CNC tapping centers, drill presses with tapping attachments, and manual tapping operations where a through-hole is present and chip evacuation out the front of the hole is acceptable. The right-hand thread direction and H5 thread limit make it compatible with standard UNF fastener fit tolerances in precision assemblies. It is not designed for blind-hole applications where forward chip push would cause packing.
Designed for through-hole threading applications in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces requiring a 5/16-24 UNF thread. Part of the KENNAMETAL T820 series spiral point tap line.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping operations and cutting tool safety. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is aligned to the hole axis before engaging the tap. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or flood coolant externally — this tap does not have coolant-through capability. Do not use in blind holes, as the spiral point geometry is designed to evacuate chips forward and will pack them at the bottom of a blind bore.
