The KENNAMETAL 5416889 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. It cuts a 5/16-18 UNC right-hand thread and features a plug chamfer for starting in pre-drilled through holes. Built from HSS-E (high-speed steel with cobalt), the tap carries an oxide coating that reduces friction and provides light corrosion resistance during storage and use. The H7 thread limit keeps tolerance control consistent across production runs. With an overall length of 2.72 inches and a thread length of 0.69 inches, this tap fits standard tap holders and machine setups without modification.
This tap is suited for light to medium production tapping in machining centers, drill presses, and CNC equipment where through-hole threading is required. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting edge, keeping the flutes clear during the threading pass. It is appropriate for use in ferrous materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The T820 series from KENNAMETAL is a shop-floor standard for general-purpose machine tapping in these material groups. Material grade KSP39 provides the substrate toughness needed for interrupted or difficult-entry cuts in the listed materials.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Compatible with standard tap holders accepting a 0.318-inch shank diameter. Part of the KENNAMETAL T820 series.
Machinists and CNC operators should verify that the pre-drilled hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for 5/16-18 UNC before threading. Ensure the tap holder provides adequate axial float to prevent thread pitch errors during machine tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or tapping oil for the workpiece material to extend tool life. Power down and secure the workpiece firmly before initiating the tapping cycle.
