The KENNAMETAL 5416856 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in 1/4-20 UNC applications. Built from HSS-E (High-Speed Steel-E, grade KSP39), the tap features an oxide coating that reduces friction and improves chip evacuation during the threading operation. With 3 flutes and a plug chamfer, it is suited for machine tapping in production environments where the tool pushes chips ahead of the cut into a through hole. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a thread length of 0.63 inches. The shank diameter measures 0.255 inches. This is a right-hand, H7 thread limit tap from the Kennametal T820 series, intended for installation by machinists, toolroom technicians, and CNC setup personnel.
This tap is used in through-hole threading of ferrous materials including steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. It is appropriate for CNC machining centers, drill presses with tapping attachments, and manual tapping operations where a through-hole exit exists for chip clearance. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in over several threads, making it a standard choice for production tapping in medium-hardness materials. It is not suited for blind-hole applications where chip pushback cannot exit the hole.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. Compatible with standard 1/4-20 UNC tap holders, quick-change tapping chucks, and floating tap holders accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter. Series T820 from Kennametal.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and torque limits for the workpiece material. Secure the tap in a properly sized holder and confirm spindle alignment before engaging the workpiece. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped — dry tapping is generally not recommended for stainless steel. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each production run; a worn tap will produce out-of-tolerance threads and may break in the hole.
