The KENNAMETAL 5403017 is a CNMG432MR turning insert in grade KCM25, designed for indexable toolholders used in CNC turning, facing, and boring operations. The insert features a multilayer CVD coating — TiN over MTCVD TiCN over Al2O3 — that delivers a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to interrupted and continuous cuts. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a neutral hand orientation and negative rake geometry provides four usable cutting edges per insert. A honed cutting edge and 0.0313-inch corner radius help manage chip loads across roughing and medium machining passes. Carbide substrate grade KCM25 is rated for high toughness in steel applications and moderate wear resistance in stainless steel.
This insert is intended for turning steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces in production machining environments. The MR chip breaker geometry is optimized for roughing and medium machining, making it a practical choice on manual and CNC lathes where chip control across varying feed rates and depths of cut up to 0.250 inches is required. Holding method is compatible with clamp-and-pin style KENLOC toolholders. This insert suits machinists and tool-room technicians working in ISO P and M material groups.
Designed for use in KENLOC clamp-and-pin style indexable toolholders accepting CNMG432 inserts. Conforms to ANSI insert code CNMG432 and ISO insert code CNMG120408. Compatible with ISO standard toolholders specifying clearance code N, tolerance code M, and a 0.2031-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder pocket geometry before installation.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with indexable carbide tooling. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not substitute fasteners. Inspect the pocket seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination can cause premature edge failure or insert breakage.
