The KENNAMETAL 5397487 is a replaceable-tip drill in the KSEM Plus series, designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and stainless steel applications. The drill features a solid carbide tip with a TiAlN coating applied via a PVD process, a 140-degree included angle, and a cutting diameter of 0.8752 inches (22.23 mm). It runs two helical flutes with a 2-margin configuration and supports through-coolant delivery, including MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) setups. This tool is installed by machinists and tooling technicians on CNC machining centers and drilling machines where consistent hole quality and tip replaceability are required.
This replaceable-tip drill is suited for drilling into steel and stainless steel workpieces in both production and job-shop environments. It handles standard drilling as well as inclined-exit and stacked-plate drilling applications. The KSEM Plus system uses a clamp-style insert holding method, allowing the carbide tip to be swapped at the machine without removing the drill body from the spindle. This makes it a practical choice for operations focused on reducing tool changeover time and maintaining consistent cutting geometry across multiple tips.
Designed for use with KSEM Plus series drill bodies accepting insert seat size 4. The ISO number KSEM0875HPG identifies the compatible tip-to-body interface. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO material code P) and stainless steel (ISO material code M).
Installation and tip replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician following the machine tool builder and Kennametal KSEM system guidelines. Power down and lock out the spindle before removing or seating the carbide tip. Use the specified clamping torque per the KSEM system documentation — do not estimate or substitute fastener torque. Confirm through-coolant connections are clear and free of obstruction before resuming operation.
