The KENNAMETAL 5397389 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the KSEM Plus series, designed for high-productivity drilling in steel and stainless steel applications. It carries the KCPM45 manufacturer grade with a fine grain solid carbide tip applied via PVD-deposited TiAlN coating. The drill features a 16.09mm (0.6335 inch) cutting diameter, a 140-degree drill point angle, and a helical flute configuration with two flutes and two margins. Coolant-through capability, including MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubricant) compatibility, supports chip evacuation and tool life in demanding production environments. Licensed HVAC, machining, and metalworking professionals recognize this series for its repeatable tip indexing without full body replacement.
This drill is suited for production drilling operations in ferrous materials, specifically steel and stainless steel (ISO material codes P and M). Typical applications include straight-entry drilling, inclined exit drilling, and stacked plate drilling. The HPG insert geometry and standard point type make it appropriate for through-hole and blind-hole work in both job shop and high-volume manufacturing environments. The KSEM Plus replaceable tip system reduces per-hole tooling cost compared to solid carbide drills by allowing tip replacement while retaining the drill body.
Designed for use with the KSEM Plus replaceable tip drill body system; the insert seat size is 1 and the ISO insert number is KSEM0634HPG. Verify body compatibility by matching insert seat size before ordering tips separately.
Replaceable tip installation and removal should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine powered down and spindle locked. Use the manufacturer-recommended clamping tool for the KSEM Plus system to seat and secure the tip without over-torquing or cross-threading the clamp mechanism. Confirm coolant-through passages are clear before operation, particularly when switching between flood and MQL delivery. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine tool manufacturer guidelines for high-speed drilling operations.
