The KENNAMETAL 5388031 is a CCMT-style indexable turning insert designed for precision material removal on steel and cast iron workpieces. It carries the KCP10B manufacturer grade and features a multilayer CVD coating system of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiOCN applied via MTCVD process, delivering thermal resistance and wear protection across a range of cutting conditions. The insert has an 80-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a honed cutting edge. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and an insert thickness of 5/32 inch, it fits standard CCMT screw-on toolholders. Two cutting edges are available per insert.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations in ISO material groups P (steel) and K (cast iron). It is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes within its rated depth of cut and is commonly used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes in production and job-shop environments. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation, making it a practical choice for continuous and interrupted cuts on ferrous materials. Machinists and tooling technicians working in general metalworking, aerospace component machining, and repair shops will find this insert a direct-fit solution for standard CCMT tooling setups.
Designed for use in standard CCMT screw-on indexable toolholders rated for 3/8-inch inscribed circle inserts. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K). Suitable for turning, facing, and boring operations per manufacturer specifications.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Use the correct torx or hex key to torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer specification — do not over-tighten or use impact drivers on insert screws. Verify insert seating and pocket cleanliness before resuming cutting operations.
