The KENNAMETAL 5090893 is a solid carbide turning insert in the WNMG431MS geometry, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process and graded KCU10. It is an 80-degree trigon-shaped insert belonging to the KENLOC series, designed for external and internal turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. The insert features a negative rake angle of 13 degrees, a neutral hand, and a honed cutting edge for consistent engagement. With six available cutting edges per insert and an MS chip breaker geometry, it targets roughing to medium machining passes. The inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches with a corner radius of 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch).
This insert is suited for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium across a range of material grades including C3 and C4 carbide classifications. The KCU10 grade delivers high wear resistance combined with moderate toughness, making it effective in applications where tool life and edge stability are priorities. It is used in job shops and production environments where consistent chip control across roughing and medium cuts is required. The maximum depth of cut reaches 0.200 inches (5.08 mm), supporting aggressive stock removal in production turning setups.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting WNMG431 (ISO WNMG080404) inserts with clamp or pin retention. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards for direct interchange with toolholders specifying the WNMG431 seat geometry.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all axes are at a safe position before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the pocket walls and apply the appropriate clamping torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification using the correct Torx or hex key. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new edge to prevent insert rocking and premature failure.
