The KENNAMETAL 5090498 is a solid carbide turning insert with a TiAlN PVD coating, designed for general turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries the ANSI insert code CNMG433 and the ISO designation CNMG120412MS, placing it in the KENLOC series under grade KCU10. The insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and an MS chip breaker geometry engineered for roughing through medium machining passes. The inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches, insert length is 0.5077 inches, and the corner radius is 3/64 inches (0.0469 inches). Four cutting edges are available per insert.
This insert is suited for CNC turning centers and manual lathes used in production and job-shop environments. The KCU10 grade targets primary workpiece materials coded P, M, K, N, S, and H, covering steel and stainless steel at high to moderate wear-resistance levels, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous materials, superalloys, and hardened materials. The MS chip breaker geometry makes it a practical choice when operators cycle between roughing and medium-depth passes without changing inserts. Typical applications include external and internal diameter turning, facing, and light boring where a negative rake, negative clearance insert geometry is appropriate.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders that accept CNMG433 (ISO CNMG120412) inserts with clamp or pin retention. Suitable for toolholders configured for negative-rake, 80-degree diamond inserts with a 0.2031-inch hole diameter and 3/16-inch insert thickness.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Before seating the insert, ensure the toolholder pocket and clamp surfaces are clean and free of chips or debris, as contamination will affect insert seating and edge life. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamp hardware for the KENLOC holder; do not substitute fasteners. Verify spindle and axis locks are engaged before handling inserts, and follow shop lockout procedures when changing inserts on live tooling or turret stations.
