Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 5090494 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert in grade KCU10, designed for high-performance metal removal in steel, stainless steel, and superalloy and titanium applications. The insert features a TiAlN PVD coating applied over a solid carbide substrate, delivering thermal resistance and edge stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. It carries an 80-degree diamond shape with a negative rake angle of 13 degrees, a honed cutting edge, and an MS chip breaker geometry suited for medium to finishing operations. With four usable cutting edges, it offers a practical cost-per-edge advantage in production turning environments. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers of this tooling.

This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The MS chip breaker geometry performs at light to medium depths of cut, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.1691 inches. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P), stainless steel (ISO M), and superalloys and titanium (ISO S). Secondary material compatibility extends to cast iron (ISO K) and non-ferrous metals (ISO N). It is held in place by a clamp and pin system consistent with KENLOC series toolholders. The insert conforms to ANSI and ISO standards and carries industry standard number CNMG4305MS.

Key Features

  • TiAlN PVD coating for thermal and wear resistance on difficult-to-machine alloys
  • 80-degree diamond insert shape with negative rake for rigid, stable cutting action
  • MS chip breaker optimized for medium finishing passes on steel and stainless
  • Four cutting edges per insert for maximum tool life per unit cost
  • Honed cutting edge style reduces microchipping at the edge line
  • Compatible with turning, facing, and boring applications on a single insert

Compatibility

Designed for use in KENLOC series toolholders that accept CNMG-style inserts with a clamp and pin holding method. Conforms to ANSI and ISO CNMG4305 form factor specifications.

Installation Notes

This insert is installed and indexed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate KENLOC clamp torque tool per the toolholder manufacturer instructions — do not overtighten the clamp screw by hand. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for chips or debris before each installation to ensure full seating and proper edge engagement.
