The KENNAMETAL 5062117 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SNMG643RP geometry, coated with TiAlN via a PVD process and graded KCU10. It belongs to the KENLOC series and is designed for external turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. The square insert shape (S) provides 8 usable cutting edges, and the RP chip breaker geometry targets roughing to medium machining applications. The KCU10 grade delivers high to moderate wear resistance combined with toughness, making it well suited for interrupted cuts and variable stock conditions. A chamfered and honed cutting edge style improves edge stability under load. This insert is installed and changed by machinists and CNC toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is intended for machining steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, aluminum, and hardened materials, covering ISO material groups P, M, K, N, S, and H. It is rated for roughing and medium machining passes with a maximum depth of cut of 0.25 inches (6.35 mm). The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with standard SNMG-style toolholders using clamp or pin holding methods. The ANSI insert code is SNMG643 and the ISO insert code is SNMG190612, both of which are the recognized standards for toolholder matching in industrial turning applications.
Designed for use in standard SNMG-style toolholders that accept a 3/4-inch inscribed circle, 1/4-inch thick square insert with a 0.3125-inch hole diameter, using clamp or pin holding methods. ANSI size code 643; ISO size code 190612.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician with the machine in a full stopped and locked-out state per applicable OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Verify the toolholder pocket and seating surface are clean and free of chips before indexing or replacing the insert. Do not exceed the recommended maximum depth of cut for the insert geometry. Torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate.
