The KENNAMETAL 4176088 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured in the Top Notch series, this insert features a KCU10 grade with an AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) PVD coating for extended tool life in demanding applications. The NGD-style insert delivers a 4.80 mm (0.1890 inch) cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 9.53 mm (0.3752 inch), making it well suited for medium to deep groove profiles. It is installed and changed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians using a clamp-style insert holding method.
This insert is intended for use in turning and grooving applications where consistent groove width, depth accuracy, and surface finish are critical. The right-hand cutting orientation suits standard lathe configurations. The K chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation in grooving passes. The 55-degree included angle and 0.57 mm (0.0225 inch) corner radius suit a range of groove geometries without a full-radius profile. Typical applications include groove cutting in steel, alloy steel, and similar materials within the C3 and C4 material grade range.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard stocking insert for Top Notch series clamp-style grooving toolholders accepting insert seat size 4. The manufacturer cross-reference number is NGD4189R/LK. This insert is sold individually; the minimum order quantity is 5 pieces per purchase.
This insert is installed and serviced by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct clamping screw and torx key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert properly in the Top Notch pocket. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure accurate positioning and avoid premature edge failure.
