The KENNAMETAL 4175989 is a carbide threading insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision thread-cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to insert style NTP in grade KCU10, it features an AlTiN finish applied via PVD coating process, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during high-speed threading passes. The insert handles both internal and external threading with a partial profile 60-degree included angle, making it a versatile single tool for a wide range of thread forms. Licensed machinists and CNC operators typically specify this insert for production threading in steel and alloy workpiece materials.
This insert covers external pitch ranges of 1.25 to 4.00 mm (6 to 20 TPI) and internal pitch ranges of 2.00 to 5.00 mm (5 to 12 TPI), supporting a broad spectrum of common thread sizes in both metric and unified inch standards. It is suited for use in production shops, tool rooms, and contract machining environments where consistent thread quality is required across multiple part runs. The right-hand cutting orientation accommodates standard lathe setups without special toolholder modifications.
Designed for use with Top Notch series toolholders that accept NTP style, size 3 threading inserts. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against KENNAMETAL Top Notch system toolholder documentation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine in a safe, locked-out state before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer specification for clamping screws — do not overtighten. Ensure the insert seats fully and cleanly in the pocket before resuming cutting operations. Confirm correct spindle direction and feed rate settings match the insert hand and thread pitch before initiating the threading cycle.
