The KENNAMETAL 4175901 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and profile turning operations. Manufactured to the NR2031 insert style within the Top Notch series, it features a PVD-applied AlTiN coating and a KCU10 grade carbide substrate for wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The cutting width is 1.58 mm with a maximum depth of cut of 2.79 mm and a full corner radius of 0.79 mm. This left-hand insert is held in place by a clamp-style toolholder and is intended for use by machinists and CNC lathe operators working in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for metric-specified grooving applications in C3 and C4 material grade categories, which generally cover cast irons and non-ferrous materials as well as harder ferrous workpieces depending on application conditions. The Top Notch series is a widely used platform in turning centers and manual lathes configured for external grooving and parting. The left-hand designation determines tool approach direction and must be matched to the correct Top Notch toolholder. Maximum depth of cut range is 2.00 mm to 3.00 mm, making this insert appropriate for shallow-to-medium groove profiles.
Designed for use with Top Notch series clamp-style grooving toolholders that accept the NR2031 insert size in left-hand configuration. Verify toolholder hand, insert seat, and clamp specifications before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine in a locked-out, zero-energy state before any insert change. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and confirm the clamp engages without rocking or play. Do not exceed the rated maximum depth of cut for this insert. Inspect the insert seat and clamp screw condition at each change to prevent premature edge failure.
