The KENNAMETAL 4175894 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and cutoff operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NGP insert style within the Top Notch series, it features a KCU10 grade carbide substrate with an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process, delivering strong wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert cuts a width of 0.0311 inches with a maximum depth of cut of 0.05 inches, making it suited for fine, shallow grooving passes. A right-hand cutting orientation and positive 5-degree rake angle promote chip control and reduce cutting forces. Machinists and CNC operators install this insert into compatible Top Notch toolholders as part of a quick-change grooving system.
This insert is intended for use in metal-cutting applications on CNC turning equipment where tight-tolerance grooves are required. The 0.0311-inch cutting width and shallow maximum depth of cut make it well-suited for precision grooving of smaller-diameter workpieces in production and job-shop environments. The AlTiN PVD coating supports performance in steel, stainless steel, and other ferrous materials at moderate to high cutting speeds. Insert size is 2031, and the series designation is Top Notch. This item is sold individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 5 units.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NGP-style inserts, insert size 2031. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number for this insert is NGP2031R/L.
Installation of grooving inserts is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing any insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before inserting; foreign material under the insert seat will affect geometry and can fracture the carbide. Do not overtighten the clamping screw beyond toolholder manufacturer specifications, and inspect the insert seat and clamping components for wear at each change interval.
