The KENNAMETAL 4171848 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation WNMG431FF and ISO designation WNMG080404FF, designed for precision finishing operations on CNC and manual lathes. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this insert delivers high wear resistance and moderate toughness across a range of workpiece materials. It features an 80-degree trigon (W-shape) geometry, a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 0.0156 inch corner radius, and a neutral hand orientation. The FF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts. Machinists and CNC programmers in production shops handling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and superalloys will find this insert well suited to tight-tolerance finishing work.
The 4171848 is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N), superalloys and titanium (S), and hardened materials (H). It belongs to KENNAMETAL's KENLOC series and is designed for use in standard WNMG-style toolholders that accept clamp and pin insert retention. Typical applications include finish passes on turned components where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical. The negative rake and negative side clearance geometry suit high-feed finishing on rigid setups.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard production insert for WNMG-style toolholders accepting a 431 ANSI size code insert. Suitable for use in any rigidly held WNMG clamp-and-pin toolholder system conforming to ANSI and ISO standards for this insert geometry.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert firmly into the toolholder pocket before engaging the clamp or pin to prevent seating errors that can cause insert breakage or poor surface finish. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before each insert change. Never exceed the maximum depth of cut rating for this insert geometry.
